Online/Self-Paced Courses

The CIS/Office Administration Department offers many classes online, in a self-paced format, or on a short-term schedule to accommodate the many needs of the working student. See the current Class Schedule for class offerings.
Self-Paced Classes
Classes in the self-paced (open-entry/open-exit program) are variable unit and may be started up to week 14 of the semester and completed any time before the close of the semester. Students may complete assignments at their own pace and their class progress is monitored by their assigned instructor. The CIS Computer Lab is available for student use and testing. Refer to an instructor in the CIS/Office Administration Department area for more information and new class offerings.
CIS 75 Business Skills Development
(Non word-processing classes focused on computer software application and office
skills required for employment.)
- Basic Computer Keyboarding
1 Unit
Provides learning of basic keyboarding skills (letters, numbers, and symbols on
the keyboard) and formatting as well as a working knowledge of the microcomputer
- Introduction to Accounting
1-2 Units
The basics of journal entries, ledgers, and balance sheets in the accounting cycle.
- Keyboarding Skills Development
1-2 Units
Designed for students who know how to type, but who need to develop speed and
accuracy.
- Lotus 1-2-3 Windows
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in the use of the popular Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program,
but through the Windows environment.
- Microsoft Access 2002
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in the use of the popular Microsoft Access database program.
- Microsoft Excel 2002
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in the use of the popular Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program.
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in the use of the popular PowerPoint presentation program.
- Microsoft Windows XP
½ Unit
The program provides instruction in using the features of the Microsoft Windows
operating system.
- Telephone Techniques
1 Unit
Designed to improve telephone communication skills in the area of handling incoming
and outgoing calls through the use of modern telephone equipment and services.
- Ten-Key Electronic Calculator
½ Unit
Provides basic skill in operating the ten-key calculator by touch.
CIS 250 Word Processing and CIS251 Advanced Word Processing
(Word-processing classes focused on computer software application and office skills
required for employment.)
- Microsoft Word 2002
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in Microsoft Word from basic editing to advanced features.
Students will learn the skills required for the completion of the Microsoft Office
Specialist Core exam.
- Corel WordPerfect 9
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in Corel WordPerfect from basic editing to advanced features.
- Advanced Microsoft Word
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in Microsoft Word using the advanced features. Students will
learn the skills required for the completion of the Microsoft Office Specialist
Expert exam.
- Advanced Corel WordPerfect
1-2 Units
Provides instruction in Corel WordPerfect using the advanced features.
Online Classes
Online classes are available with more classes being added each semester. Students are usually required to attend on the first day of class to meet with their instructor and set up their online access. Students may be required to purchase a textbook and/or software to complete the class. Contact the instructor listed in the Class Schedule for more information.
CIS 101 Beginning Computer Keyboarding
1-3 Units
This course is designed for students whose keyboarding skills will be primary
and/or secondary to their vocation and/or for personal use. Students receive basic
formatting instructions for letters, memos, tables, and reports. This is a full-semester
online course and is designed to be taught entirely through the Internet. Assignments
are submitted online and testing and timed writings will take place on campus
in the CIS lab.
CIS 108 Introduction to the Internet
2 Units
This course will prepare students to use the Internet. Emphasis is on introducing
the features of the Internet, electronic mail, Telnet, FTP, Usenet, Gopher and
other Internet services. This is an online course and is designed to be taught entirely
through the Internet. Assignments are submitted online and testing takes place
on campus in the CIS lab.
CIS 155 Web Publishing with Microsoft FrontPage
2 Units
This course offers the introductory features of Microsoft FrontPage and how it
can be utilized in a business environment. Includes creating Web pages with graphics,
links, and multimedia elements. Assignments are submitted online and testing takes
place on campus in the CIS lab.
