CERTIFICATE/DEGREE PROGRAMS


The Management and Marketing Departments offer a wide array of courses to meet your academic and professional needs - close to 50 different classes, in all. Whether you want to learn about a specific subject, work toward a certificate or an Associate Degree, or prepare to transfer to a four-year college or university, you'll find that we have the classes you need. Management and Marketing students have several options when it comes to certificate, degree and transfer programs. These programs are particularly useful if you want to:

  • Develop new business skills
  • Qualify for a new job
  • Enter a new career in management or marketing
  • Start your own business
  • Transfer to a four-year college or university

Certificate programs consist of groups of courses designed to provide an in-depth study of a particular subject without the additional General Education requirements of an Associate Degree.

Associate Degree programs are designed for students who desire a two-year degree with an occupational major and/or who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university. These degrees expand on the certificate requirements to include General Education units and elective courses for a total of 60 units or more.

The four certificate programs that follow can all lead to Associate Degrees when the appropriate General Education and other requirements are met.

CERTIFICATE/ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE IN MANAGEMENT

This program is designed for students who wish to prepare for a career in the administration of modern organizations. It surveys the functional operations of business organizations, giving special consideration to the management of human resources, law, ethics, marketing, accounting practices, and economics.

CERTIFICATE/ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE IN SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

This program is designed to provide students with the necessary information and skills to start, manage, and promote a small business enterprise. It focuses on the fundamentals of business ownership and on ways to develop one's entrepreneurial abilities. (28 units)

CERTIFICATE/ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE IN MARKETING

This program is designed to assist those students preparing for a career in the distributive occupations, providing goods and services to satisfy customers' needs and wants. It is intended to develop basic skills in salesmanship, merchandising, advertising, and other marketing practices.

Required courses include:

  • MGT 161 Introduction to Business 3 Units
  • MKT 222 Principles of Marketing 3
  • MKT 103 Principles of Advertising 3
  • MKT 208 Principles of Selling 3
  • MKT 105 Principles of Retailing 3

CERTIFICATE/ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE IN RETAIL MANAGEMENT

This program is designed to prepare students to assume leadership positions in the retail sector, providing them with the essential business skills needed to perform supervisory and management duties. Created through a partnership with the Western Association of Food Chains and retailers in a variety of fields, it will help students pursue careers in the grocery industry and others that deal directly with consumers, such as the apparel, home furnishings, general merchandise, and services industries.

CERTIFICATE-ONLY PROGRAMS

The following certificates provide students with specialized skills in management or marketing and in specific industries or occupations. They offer a convenient way to obtain and update job skills, learn about new fields, or gain entry to certain occupations. These certificates can be taken by themselves or in combination with other certificate or degree programs.

SHORT-TERM, CREDIT/NONCREDIT CERTIFICATES

The three certificate programs that follow consist of short-term (1/2 to 1 unit) classes, offered on a credit/noncredit basis and presented in a seminar-style format. Students may take as many classes as they wish in one or all programs and the units earned can be applied toward graduation.

PROFESSIONAL MARKETING CERTIFICATE

This certificate program provides students with a working knowledge of marketing and the activities required to satisfy customers' needs and wants. It is designed for marketing professionals and those wishing to pursue marketing careers. Consisting of short-term (1/2 to 1 unit), credit/noncredit classes, it offers a convenient way to meet employers' requirements for professional development, to gain entry to the marketing field, and to earn additional units toward graduation. All of the classes are presented in a seminar format and are scheduled on Saturdays.

This certificate program provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out the steps in the selling process from finding customers to making the sales and building positive relationships. Consisting of short-term (1/2 to 1 unit), credit/non-credit classes, these seminars are offered on Saturdays.

SMALL BUSINESS OPERATIONS CERTIFICATE

This certificate program provides students with information on the various steps and management decisions involved in starting and operating a business. It is designed for both prospective and current business owners. Consisting of short-term (1/2 to 1 unit), credit/noncredit classes, it provides a convenient way to learn what it takes to succeed as a business owner. All of the classes are presented in a seminar format and are held on Saturdays.

SPECIAL INTEREST CERTIFICATES

The following certificate programs described here offer specialized training in management, marketing and various technical areas, covering such fields as Geographic Information Systems, the Internet, Healthcare, Hospitality, Multicultural Marketing, Multimedia Advertising and Music. For a list of the required courses in each program check the catalog or speak to a counselor or faculty member.

BUSINESS ECONOMICS CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered joining with the Economics Department) combines economics principles with business practices. It provides students with the knowledge to make financial decisions related to supply and demand, the marketplaces and consumers behavior. 12 Units

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS/MARKETING CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered jointly with the Geography Department) provides students with the knowledge and skills to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computerized mapping techniques in the field of marketing. Converting geographic data into visual displays, GIS shows businesses where potential customers are and enables them to evaluate sites, plan distribution networks, organize sales territories, and find new business opportunities. 15 Units

HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISION CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered jointly with the Health Sciences Division) helps prepare students to work in the health care field in a management or supervisory capacity. Training students to work in a variety of health care delivery settings, including physicians' offices, hospitals, health maintenance organizations and insurance companies, the certificate focuses on the leadership, motivation, organization, planning, and other skills needed to supervise others. 16 Units

HEALTH CARE MARKETING AND SALES CERTIFICATE

This certificate provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work in the health care field in a marketing or sales capacity. Preparing students to work in a variety of health care delivery settings, including physicians' offices, hospitals, health maintenance organizations and insurance companies, the certificate focuses on such areas as: sales and customer service, marketing research, advertising, public relations, and community outreach. 16 Units

INTERNET MARKETING CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered jointly with the CIS Department) prepares students for a career in the rapidly growing field of Internet marketing. The program is designed to help students develop a working knowledge of how to utilize the Internet as a marketing tool to promote a business, build positive relationships with customers, suppliers and distributors, generate sales revenues, and obtain marketing research information. 17 Units

LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE

This certificate program provides students with the necessary skills to be effective leaders in their chosen fields. Students who complete the certificate will learn a variety of leadership styles and management and motivation techniques that will enable them to work productively with others and to achieve their objectives. 15 Units.

MULTICULTURAL MARKETING CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered jointly with the Social Science and Language Arts divisions) prepares students to work in the marketing field helping businesses and organizations satisfy customers in America's culturally diverse society. Bringing together social science, language arts and marketing, the certificate enables students to apply the knowledge of different cultural groups' preferences, behaviors and languages to create product development, promotion, distribution and pricing strategies. 17 Units

MULTIMEDIA ADVERTISING CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered as one of the modules in the Multimedia Program) will enable students to apply multimedia production skills and knowledge in such areas as the Internet, computer imaging, photography, art and music to careers in the field of advertising, developing promotional materials to communicate with customers. 16 ~ 17 Units

MUSIC (COMMERCIAL) MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered jointly with the Music Department) provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to work in music management. Students who complete this program will learn about the different job opportunities and career paths within the music business and will develop the music industry awareness and management and marketing skills needed to pursue their goals. 15 Units

RESTAURANT/LODGING ENTREPRENEUR CERTIFICATE

This certificate (offered jointly with the Hospitality Department) provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to start, manage and promote their own restaurant, inn, or bed & breakfast establishment. Students who complete the program will learn about guest relations, customer service, basic management techniques, food handling and preparation, marketing and sales of their own business. 15½ Units.

SPECIAL EVENT MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE

This certificate program (offered joining with the Hospitality Department) provides students with the skills and knowledge to plan, stage, and coordinate special events. 15 Units
